Rice Krispies Treats – Watermelon

Total ingredients:
8 cups marshmallows
6 T butter
food coloring – green and red
8 cups crispy rice cereal
a few chocolate chips or raisins for “watermelon seeds”

Grease two 8-9″ round cake pans.

Make 2 batches as following, first with green food coloring, then with red.
Melt in pan on low heat, stirring gently:
4 cups marshmallows
3 T butter
Remove from heat and add color, one drop at a time.  Once the color is uniform, add the crispy rice cereal.

Divide in 1/2 – make a ring around the inside of 2 greased cake pans.  You might want to rub your fingers in butter to do this so it doesn’t stick to you, as it’s kinda hot.  🙂

Make the red batch, same directions as above.  Divide in 1/2 again – press into center of the pans.

While still warm (not too hot) place chocolate chips or raisins as watermelon seeds.

Place chocolate chips or raisins in the red area while still warm.
Press them in a bit so they’ll stay.

Cutting with a serrated knife seems to work best.
It might be helpful to dip the knife in a glass of water if it’s sticking.

Raise a Reader tips from www.UsborneUSA.comRaising a Reader isn’t something that just happens by chance.  It’s something you work toward every day as a parent.  This isn’t hard work.  Just incorporate these tips daily and your child will reap the rewards their entire life!

Owl Valentine Box

My first grader wanted to make an owl Valentine box, so we looked at photos of owls on Google and then started cutting. We used a Capri Sun box, which we covered in brown paper bag. Then we used construction paper. While I figured out how to make feathers, my first grader made the face herself. She’s most proud of the eye brows. 🙂 One wing holds a cupcake and the other a Valentine!
